This is not an issue notice about who has what ancestry. I have Native American tribal ancestry on both sides of my family tree.
Even the Native Americans who lived in this land before Columbus had their own tribal lands, space, boundaries, countries. Any Native American with Spanish ancestry who has European Colonization issues should take it up with Spain.

When you say that people who assist or hire aliens should be punished by the law, are you saying that there aren't laws that already address this? There are. As with every law in this land, there are people that break them and don't get caught. People speed every day. People drink and drive every day of the week. One year after the drafting of the constitution eleven of the thirteen colonies had ratified the constitution and thereby the United States Federal Government was created. The States of America had created a Federal Government.
In the year 2002 do we still have a constitution that would be recognized by any of the men who signed our constitution on September 17, 1787?
Article 1 of the constitution outlines the legislative powers granted to the Federal Government. Here are some examples of how those powers have changed since 1787.
Article 1, Section 1, Paragraph 1, "All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives."
Lawmaking authority and enforcement has been delegated to EPA, DEA, BATF, FCC, FAA, and a dozen more non-representative agencies. In the most recent examples of usurpation of power our airport terminals have been turned into training grounds for future Gestapo agents. Our elected representatives no longer make the rules and regulations that govern our lives they are now made by faceless bureaucrats who have secure civil service positions.
Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3, "Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several states which may be included within this union, according to their respective numbers,…"
Eradicated by the 16th Amendment in 1913, allowing for Income Tax.
Article 1, Section 3, Paragraph 1, "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each state, chosen by the legislature therof, for six years;…"
Eradicated by the 17th Amendment in 1913, thus making the election of U.S. Senators based on the principles of a Democratic election as opposed to a Republican election. This doesn’t seem too bad does it? We are a democracy aren’t we? No, we are a Republic. Congressmen serve for two years, Senators serve for six years. Congressmen are supposed to be close to the people and responsive to the people. Senators are supposed to be slightly more removed from the whims of the masses. This was a protection put in place to protect us from shortsighted immediate gains, feel good ideas that come out of a frenzied mob mentality.
Article 1, Section 8, POWERS GRANTED TO CONGRESS, Paragraph 12, "To raise and support armies, but no appropriation of money to that use shall be for a longer term than two years;" Paragraph 13, "To provide and maintain a navy;"
These two paragraphs combine show us the intended methods of defending our nation. It provides for a standing Navy and a short term use of armies. In 1787 military superpowers had large navies and oppressive governments had large armies which were used as often against their own citizens as they were against foreign nations. Article 1, Section 8, gives added insight into why there was a need to break away from England and form a new nation. England had a large standing army which it used against its subjects. In 2002 the United States has massive federal regulatory agencies which it uses against its citizens.
Article 1, Section 9, LIMITATIONS ON POWERS GRANTED TO THE UNITED STATES, Paragraph 4, "No capitation, or other direct, tax shall be laid, unless in proportion to the census or enumeration hereinbefore directed to be taken."
Eradicated by the 16th Amendment in 1913, allowing for Income Tax.

One of the most contentious issues between the colonists and England was taxation. The prohibition on non-proportional taxation is mentioned twice within Article 1 of the Constitution. By that you may infer that the framers of the constitution believed a non-proportional tax to be an especially egregious act by government.

Let’s step back a minute. In 1787 when the states created a federal government what did they expect the federal government would do? How would the newly created federal government spend money?

In the book "The life of Colonel David Crockett" by Edward Ellis, a story is re-told about an encounter that U.S. Congressman David Crockett had with a constituent. This constituent said that he would no longer vote for Congressman Crockett because in the previous year Crockett had voted for $20,000 to be used to help the victims of a large fire in Georgetown where dozens of families lost their homes. Crockett argued that a nation as rich as America should take care of its women and children. But the constituent argued that it is not the amount or the cause that matters but the principle of government charity. Is it proper for government to participate in charity?

Don't know who you are, but we have laws in regards to immigration. People immigrating that are not in compliance with those laws are here
illegally and should be deported. If they are in compliance with those
laws then they are here legally.
I don't really care how many there are, where they come from or how they
got here. If we have a law, we should seek to enforce it. ...... If our government wants to do its job and enforce our immigration laws, then it is a rather simple matter to do so. Anyone who contends that we through our government cannot "legally" deploy our military to guard our borders is sadly mis-informed.

I've always been proud to be an Elected Republican in such a liberal state as California. Especially so considering the fact that I am also an immigrant and became a citizen in 1991.

M.E., At a recent meeting with State Legislators I brought up the fact that "Illegal Aliens" are costing the state of California between 3 and 4 Billion dollars a year in Entitlements and that if the State were to " enforce our laws " this would be a help to correct our budget problem.
I asked what the state was intending to do about this illegal behavior. I was told by a legislator,in a Public Meeting that the state was not intending to do a thing because women and children were involved.

I am not pleased with the way the borders are controlled and that we continue to allow so many people into our country that can not take care of Themselves, are on welfare and drain Californians. Now we pay you to stay at home, we provide daycare even though you stay at home and most make more on welfare than they would if they had a job.
I found it offensive that I was a single mom, who worked full time and put myself through college and a girl in my class was on "welfare" and stated she recieved her college "free" but never intended to use it that she just wanted to have lots of babies and remain on welfare.
How furious that made me as I planned on using my education and why should we tax payers provide education if one is not going to use it.
Some how we reversed our thinking and made it "your right" to education rather than a priviledge. How many illegals also benefit from this? California is turining into a sespool because we continue to doll out money and we allow thousands of illegals show up in drolls and then we call it unconstitutional not to feed/house/educate those that came illegally?
Go figure.

Specifically I believe that we should relocate a number of
military bases along our borders. That way our soldiers would be able
to assist in the protection of our Country, while receiving valuable
training. Never has the need for this type of training been more

Our suggestions are as follows: Should an illegal immigrant come to the US to have a baby - which becomes a Citizen. After recovery, the illegal immigrant and the baby should be returned to the country of origin. The baby may then return when they turn the legal age of 18 should they pass all security checks prior to re-entry.

No legal immigrant should be able to bring any family members into the US that arn't husband, wife, children or grand parents - NO cousins, sisters or brothers.

I am a native Oregonian, Swedish and English decent. My husband's
family came from Czechoslovakia in the 40's and they immediately spoke
English and were proud to be able to speak English.
In my opinion, all people of any country are just as human as you and me.
Our government allows migration from other countries. This has
extremely affected our economy and will continue if we keep this pace of
growth with migration. It should not be an issue whether a person feels

policy issue.
In order to change the pace of migration, our federal
government needs to change our national immigration policy to basically
close the borders for all migration and from all countries.
Hispanics are just as human as the immigrants from the other countries. They have the right to live here with a better standard of living, because our government policy allows it. If United States citizens do not like it then efforts need to focus on our national policy makers of our country.
Also a question to your readers, how many languages is our country going
to cater to? Historically, ancestry learned to speak English. All
citizens of our country could possibly learn to speak another language
besides English, but with our brain capacity we can not learn five or
six languages to meet the needs of all immigrants.

First .. I understand this issue concerns more than the Hispanics. I personally have no vendetta against Mexico or Mexicans. But that has not stopped them from being rude and offensive to US citizens ... to the point of initiating strategies to disrupt our US way of life and out and out proclaiming this country is not ours and they are going to reclaim it for Mexico.
As I stated before, most people around the country haven't experienced this ... Thank God. But these are fighting words for me.
And living here, I've seen the evil that Mexicans and Hispanics have returned for the good their US host showed to them. They have far since violated all standards of tolerance, and have blatantly challenged US citizens to do anything about it. They - The Hispanics - have not been nice at all.
In your statement you point out the critical assumption that makes all the difference. The immigrants you refer to have and had a desire to be - a part of us - US citizens, and to promote the US and its ideals. They did not come with the intent of making the US an extension of their homeland. And certainly with no intention to oust the present non-hispanic US citizens.
But there needs to be closer attention given to ALL immigration to our nation. We are not responsible for supporting the entire world.

of men and women who have sought freedom.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese,
Indian, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become
part of our society, learn the language!
"In God We Trust " is our national motto. This is not some Christian,
right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian
men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is
clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the
walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider
another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our
culture.

I would suggest legislation that recognizes illegals as commitiing a federal felony.
They should then be photograped and finger printed for future identification. They should be returned from where they came and informed they may never return as a legal or illegal alien. They could never have the opportunity to work in the united states.
Individuals or firms that hire them would be seen as harboring a federal fugitive. Individuals that rent or house them woud face the same charges.
Since our jails appear to be a rest stop campared to Mexican jails, we could pay the small fee to house the illegals in Mexican prisons. But, you don't pay the fee until the full term is served.
In addition, no state could recieve federal social service funds or funds directed at education if they provided illegals with services or education.
I think it is time to consider our southern border an open wound and close it. We have the resources and the technology to do this. We only lack leaders who are willing to tackle the problem.

I understand Mr. McAlister .... There are plenty things wrong with our nation, and it's just about all the citizen's fault.
But this is OUR nation. And our grand children don't have anywhere else in the world to call home. Fix the problems, sure. Each player on a team has an assigned role. We must ALL contribute to attain victory over uncorrectness.
But Mr. McAlister .... we are a team. Having an opponent in our huddle does not help us. We must retain the integrity of OUR SIDE vs. some other side. No one holds our, and our grand childrens’ best interest in as high regard as us.
The problems we have in government are prolific. I won't ever be caught trying to defend the violations our elected officials have made against the citizenry. Whether greed motivated or something else. The treachery is plentiful. And along with that , the BIG BUSINESS MACHINE of Corporate terrorism is ruining the good name and reputation of the US citizen around the world for profit's sake.
But Mr. McAlister ... I can't find a country today that shows itself as a model we should emulate. Certainly not one in this hemisphere. And most certainly not Mexico. I don't think becoming a Mexican or Spanish colony will cure the decrepitness we have in our society. In deed ... I look at the Spanish colonies around the world and reek with pity.
And it is this pity that the Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders have used against us. Like, and more vicious than a persistent panhandler .... the Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders have sucked in all our good deeds in pity's name and stood in the kitchen of our home and demanded 3 meals a day. And further still ... they insist our home that we paid for with blood, and they NEVER owned anyway, is really there's and we stole it from them.
As I remember history... the Native Americans were on this continent before any European. The Spanish and the French and the English colonized this continent taking property rights from the Natives who were living here. The Native Americans who were here before us had their own Countries, Tribes, Lands, and boundaries. The Native Americans colonized by US government forces have been compensated, or came to terms with the " colonial " issue generations ago. And Spanish was NOT their primary language.
For a Spanish speaking colonized Native American to insist the United States of America has ANY colonial reparations owed to them is an attempt to rob the true Native Americans within the borders of the United States, and an aggressive act akin to war against the United States.
Now, Mr. McAlister. I'm sure you are not an aggressor against the United States. I can understand and applaud trying to make our home better. But ... to suggest another country's people should have ANY say so about what goes on in The United States of America, far less, possess any part of the United States of America is blatant treason.
And Mr. McAlister ... I know you aren't a traitor. Aren't you?

Your position is noble ... and you have my admiration. The ideals you project are why I love the US so much. We are filled with good-hearted people.

A number of actions are being considered that range from: establishment of an official day laborer hiring site, where workers would need to register in order to be able to solicit work; to considering new anti-loitering laws; to training of our police officers by the Homeland Security Office (INS) to be able to assist with enforcement of federal immigration laws; and participation by our police department in a regional anti-gang task force.
We are also addressing overcrowding issues that may involve some illegal aliens. There is much work to do, but these issues are foremost in our efforts.

Recent news accounts in our state media have explained how severe of a problem is faced by ranchers all along the border, the Indian tribe in New Mexico, etc., and there has now been a suggestion made that drones be used to track and apprehend illegal aliens (we know that drug smugglers slip into our country this way, so who is to say terrorists aren't also) who are simply walking into our country unopposed by anyone whose mission it is to control our borders, so maybe the publicity of how bad the problem is will eventually prompt a workable solution.

Until the INS starts doing its job properly regulating the boarders and until the restrictions placed upon local law enforcement are lifted there is not much that can be done to stem the tide of irregular immigration.
As the grandson of English immigrants (1914) and the great great grandson of German immigrants (1840s) I appreciate the desire of people to come and attach themselves to this great and wonderful nation. That said, we need to have policies that facilitate Americanization of all who wish to be counted among us while resisting all attempts to disrupt the nation through divisive activates be they of domestic or foreign origin.

including my mother, came to this country under legal means so they could

should ensure Border Patrol the proper tools necessary to secure America's

Last year, Congress granted the largest reorganization of the federal
government by the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Under
this legislation, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) will be
completely overhauled to meet the growing concerns of global terrorism and
the need for increased border security. Under the guidance of Secretary
Tom Ridge, it is my hope that the INS will become a more effective and
efficient agency.
In preventing illegal immigration, we must be very careful not to hinder
the free movement of goods, services and economic openness. American
exports should have the same access to foreign markets as foreign products
have to U.S. markets. I am a strong supporter of free and fair trade,
especially when it comes to American jobs.
Congress must act to reduce
the trade deficit, and to do this, Congress must adopt sound domestic
policies that will allow our products to compete more effectively with
foreign products.
While Governor of Virginia, I announced a plan entitled Virginia's Jobs
for Virginia's Workers, which curbed illegal immigration and welfare
dependency. Under this agreement, INS agents identify workers who are in
the country and employed illegally. After the agents remove suspected
illegal immigrants from a work site, officials notify State social service
administrators who then provide the employer with a pool of welfare
recipients to fill the vacant spot.

The decision about whether or not I am an American Citizen was largely made
in 1854, when the US Senate passed the Treaty of Mesilla (The so called
"Gadsden Purchase"), which, among other things, extended the same
citizenship rights to my great-great grandfather that had already been
granted to thousands of other former Mexican citizens in California, New
Mexico, and Texas by the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848.
You seem to be making a few assumptions that are not correct. The first is
that Mexican culture in this part of the world is a new, alien phenomenon.
In fact, this is not the case. The early decades of American rule over the
Southwest saw the earliest English-speaking settlers assimilating at least
as much with the Spanish speaking locals as the other way around.
The cattle industry, for instance, was completely transformed by this
interaction, as shown by words derived from Spanish such as "buckaroo,"
"lasso" and "rodeo."
The rhetoric I have seen in your emails and on your web pages also makes the
assumption that all Spanish surnamed residents of the United States are here
illegally. This defies logic. People were living in communities such as
Los Angeles, San Antonio, Santa Fe, and Tucson before American rule, and it
does not take a skilled genealogist to figure out that their descendents
must be around somewhere.
Most Mexican Americans that I know (myself
included) were born on this side of the line. Statistics tend to bear this
out. New Mexico had a Spanish surnamed majority until the most recent
census, and very few of those individuals were immigrants, in fact, most of
them were from families that had been in the region for centuries.
Similarly, a majority of Spanish surnamed people in Tucson are people who
were born and raised in Tucson.
While I agree that the illegal exploitation of immigrant labor by
corporations like Wal-Mart has helped to drive down wages and has damaged
the cause of organized labor, I believe that you are misdirecting your
outrage.
Much of your rhetoric seems aimed at Spanish surnamed people in
general rather than at those who cynically exploit immigrants to avoid
paying fair wages.
In large part, it is the current web of unworkable
immigration laws that makes such exploitation so lucrative. Since you have
expressed such concern for working families, I suggest that you contact the
AFL-CIO to see what their position is on these issues.
By the way, I pointed out the origin of the name "Los Angeles" only to
illustrate the point that you live in a part of the world with a long
established Mexican-American community. A majority of Los Angeles residents
remained Spanish surnamed until well into the 20th Century. Those streets
with names like "Pico" and "Sepulveda" are not named for illegal aliens, but
rather, for individuals who were once some of the town's leading citizens.
It baffles me that anyone would express dismay upon the discovery that
Spanish-speaking culture is so prevalent there.

Yes, I do know who Benedict Arnold is. I am also familiar with John Riley, Jefferson Davis, and Julius Rosenberg. They were all traitors too, but their stories seem to have very little to do with the issues we are discussing. A difference of opinion is not necessarily treason.
Your rhetoric still seems to be based on the false assumption that Mexican Americans are new arrivals on the national scene, freeloaders as it were, taking advantage of the struggles that others made in the past.
Mexican Americans have fought for this country in every war since 1848. Mexican Americans were as much a part of the Civil Rights struggles of the 1950s and 60s as anyone else. It has only been fairly recently that the Atlantic coast centered media has become aware of the presence of Mexican Culture and people in this country, so the general ignorance of this part of our history is understandable.
A lot of friends and family of mine are awful cranky about the current state of our politics and economy, however, none of them, Mexican American or otherwise, have ever seriously advocated a return of the Western States to Mexico. In fact, I have never heard anybody say such a thing in anything other than a tone of irony.
I have, however, read a lot of statements that attribute such sentiments to many prominent Mexican-Americans, but, strangely, these accusations are not backed up by actual quotes or other evidence. It seems that standing up for ones family and neighbors is somehow the same thing as advocating the reversal of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
Yes, I am aware that there are many Mexicans living in this country illegally, and yes, I am aware that this creates problems for everybody else, and that something should be done about it. However, the draconian, and sometimes very silly, enforcement of our laws has created problems. Innocent people have been detained for the high crime of being brown. Some have even made the rather strange assumption that all Mexican Americans are here illegally or are otherwise interlopers. This has occurred in the same way that racial profiling of African-Americans has occurred in other parts of the country, where some people make the assumption that someone is a criminal merely for being black.
I resent the statement that my loyalty lies "outside our borders." I once took an oath to lay down my life for this country, and I take this fairly seriously. My country is not some abstraction to me. I cannot in good conscience claim to love my country while simultaneously spreading hateful bile against my fellow citizens.

I share your concerns about the impact of this ew proposal.
As you may know, on January 7, 2004, President Bush proposed a new temporary worker system that would provide a three-year temporary visa to previously undocumented workers. Men and women in foreign countries would be able to apply for this visa if they find a job with an American company that agrees to sponsor their visa.
It is important that we protect our borders and carefully screen foreign
visitors.
We need to be sure that those who come to this country do so in good faith. I am concerned that the President's plan may create an underclass of guest workers that could depress wages and threaten American jobs.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding our nation's immigration policy.
As you know, President Bush recently announced a proposal to create a program allowing Mexican workers to move freely in the United States for up to a three year period. The President emphasized the importance of a ready supply of labor for jobs that he said Americans will not accept.
However, this proposal has generated significant controversy due to concerns that it would reward those who came to the United States illegally. The Bush proposal raised as many questions as it provided answers - mostly because the President has yet to submit legislative language to Congress.
Until that point, I will reserve judgment on the merits of this proposal.
However, I have always maintained that immigration policy should reflect our best traditions of freedom, opportunity and multi-culturalism. A bipartisan consensus exists that our immigration policies must emphasize integrity, accurate and timely services, and borders protected from those who would commit terrorist attacks.
The President has initiated a national dialogue on these and other priorities. Any change in policy should strive to integrate immigrants into our society without rewarding those who would flout the law.
Finally, President Bush must engage Mexico on the issue of domestic economic reforms to create more opportunity at home to stem the flow of illegal migration.

I have great respect for President Bush and the leadership he has provided
over the last four years. I have serious concerns, however, over recent
policy announcements with regard to undocumented workers and illegal

It appears to me that the unintended consequence of the proposals
announced earlier this week would be to create even greater numbers of
individuals entering the country illegally in hopes of finding a way to

We must not reward past

I do believe a complete overhaul of our nation's immigration system is

Thank you for contacting me regarding a Guest Worker program and the issue
of illegal immigration. I appreciate the opportunity to respond and I
appologize for the delay in my reply.
While I vehemently oppose granting "amnesty" to illegal aliens, I also
strongly believe we must create a workable program, like the ones that existed
when I was growing up in Arizona, which will allow Mexican citizens to enter the
U.S. lawfully, secure employment for a period of time in the U.S. economy and
then return home.
As long as the economy in the United States remains dramatically stronger
than Mexico’s and jobs are much more available here than south of our border,
Mexican citizens will seek to come here to better their lives.
No fence, wall or
army of border agents will be able to seal our border.
There are two things we can and should do immediately. First, we should
allow workers to enter, temporarily, but create strong incentives for them to
return home after a reasonable period of time.
Second, we should aggressively
work with, assist and pressure Mexican authorities to strengthen the Mexican
economy so their citizens can find good jobs in their country.
Many industries that are vital to Arizona’s economy rely on immigrant
workers for labor. If immigrants do not hold these positions, these industries
and our economy will suffer.
This mutually beneficial relationship, whereby
immigrants find much needed employment and Arizona companies find necessary
laborers, should not be thrown by the wayside because some immigrants come to
the United States illegally.
At the same time, we must enforce current immigration laws that prohibit
the hiring of illegal immigrants by employers. A rational plan would require
illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin and, if they choose to,
go through the process of entering the United States under a legal framework.
Those who refuse to return to their country of origin should not be eligible for
citizenship and should not be legally employable.

This is an election year , true. But our message of detering the flow of Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders has no time frame. Neither does it have a political preference.
The Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders who revage and devastate our nation and way of life don't care which political party their victims belong to ... they just want ALL we have. Never mind struggling to fix their OWN countries , as you and I are doing at present. They want our position as they took the Mayans society.
Your and my grand babies may choose completely different political views than either of us have, but , whatever their personal views ... they will be saddled with the country YOU and I leave for them.

How DARE you speak about our Country as you have.
Freedom of speech is part of our heritage, but you seem to take it a little too far. I very much disagree with what you say, but I certainly respect your "right" to say it. That is what makes us a great Country.
You seem to be a little two-sided, if you will. You demean this Country and everything in it--but you don't seem to worry too much about taking advantage of the privileges we have here. You evidently like this Country enough to partake of the money that comes your way and I am sure your way of life beats that of poor people in another country.
If you don't like this Country, my suggestion to you is to pack up and get out. Go to one of the other countries that has so much to offer---like suicide bombers--killers--criminals---maybe you would fit right in there.

A necessary comment :
I've also received a number of responses that basically say I, or we are nuts in general. My reply to these fellow countrymen is ... thanks for the ray of sunshine.
I was raised in the South, Memphis. As a child, I had no experience with any ill treatment from persons outside our nation. I never, not once, questioned or was challenged about this being my country and home. Since coming to California, I must sadly report, all our fellow countrymen haven't had that luxury.
The Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders we speak of entered this nation because of the spirit of tolerance and caring shown to them by our countrymen. Once entered, and in greater numbers than the Naturally Born American Citizens that welcomed them ... they - The Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders - have not had any tolerance or caring for their host.
Instead, they have taken every opportunity to assert that the western United States belongs to the Spanish colonized nation of Mexico and have no desire to promote the United States of America or it's ideals or it's people. They continually try to disrupt our nations way of doing things : examples are the ridiculous, recall election of California's governor , and recently an effort to have a portion of Los Angeles secede from the city as a hole : They have openly and forcefully retorted their position of over throwing the United States and conquering, subduing and victimizing all US citizens .... the very people who showed kindness to them and their oppressed conditions.
This to me is blatant, overt treason and clearly returning evil for good. And fighting words if I've ever heard any. I, we will not stand for it.
But ... when I get a response in deference to our position, it's a reminder to me that the scourge of Illegal Criminal Alien Invaders has not permeated our entire nation. For this , I thank the respondents. Because the condition is bleak here. We are truly fighting for our national identity.

My question is ... how many people do we need to be a free nation? And how will we know when we have reached that number? And, does continuing to indiscriminately drop our guard to national intruders aid our quest of being a nation.
Who is there that says we aren't a nation now. Who is it that is worthy of telling us when we are a nation and how we are to be described when giving a definition of ourselves as a nation.
I submit : We ARE a nation NOW. And a nation of free and brave citizens. And , I say ... we don't need any more invaders or guest to re-assure ourselves that we are a distinct people on this planet. And there is no one in the world who has the automatic, unchallenged privilege to enter or attack our nation without retaliation.
Our nation has been defined repeatedly by the blood and courage of brave US citizens who sacrificed what ever was necessary of themselves that a home would be left for their children to possess. A home free from threat. Whether civil threats or threats from outside our borders.
I suggest ... the fore fathers that started the " open immigration " policy never meant for the neighborly gesture of inviting friends over to jeopardize their grand children’s posterity. Those fore fathers died centuries ago. I'm sure they as I acted in the hope that their children would have the good since to retain the integrity of the nation they were suffering to leave them.
Simply put ... we should have sense enough to know when to close the door and tell company to go home ...
I submit : We are a Free and Brave nation this minute. And we don't need increased citizen numbers to re-assure ourselves of our sovereignty or the aid of foreigners to define us. We are the UNITED STATES located in America ... and this land is for our posterity.

A march in favor of 'huddled masses'

Taking a lesson from the college students of four decades ago, a group of young and old idealists is reviving the concept of the Freedom Riders that sought to integrate the South.
Two busloads ferrying some 80 people will leave Los Angeles on Sept. 23 for a two-week, cross-country trip ending in New York City, with a giant rally to press the cause of immigrants seeking citizenship.
"We recognize this is not an easy time to do this," said Bob Farrell, a former Los Angeles City Council member who was involved as one of the original Freedom Riders in 1961.
"It is never an easy time for issues like this, of fighting for the civil rights of people. But it is important to make a statement."
The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, is one of the coordinators of the trip and is involved because of growing number of Latino members in its union and its efforts to organize workers.
The event is not without its controversy.
While the organizers said the goal is to seek support for proposals that will ease citizenship for those who have lived in the United States, others see it as an effort to get a new amnesty program.
"That's all this is," said Ira Mehlman of the Federation of American Immigration Reform. "We are against the objective here, and we don't think there is any justification for granting another amnesty.
"What they are talking about is rewarding people who have broken the law. A new amnesty program would be a betrayal of the promise made to the American public in 1986.
"Also, I have to say there is something offensive about people who have been breaking the law to march on Washington to seek a new law. It's outrageous."
But Farrell said he believed the government needed to recognize a sizable population that makes up the United States.
"What we want to do is try to educate people and overcome any fears they have," said Farrell, who adds he believes there has been a change in attitude in the country in the four decades since he first freedom riders boarded a bus for the south.
"Times are different," Farrell said. "In 1961, there were laws that excluded blacks from being in certain parts of a city. That isn't the case any longer. In 1961, when we were arrested, they separated whites from the blacks. You don't see that today."
The Los Angeles delegation is made up of a diverse group of African-Americans, whites and Latinos. They are part of thousands of people from across the country who will be traveling to try to make their case and rally support at stops along the way.
One of those involved is a 22-year-old Mission College student, who asked to be identified only as George because of a fear of being identified by U.S. immigration authorities.
He has filed his papers to become a citizen after being brought to the United States by his parents when he was 7.
"I love this country," he said. "I have the paperwork in and am trying to become a citizen. What I hope we can do is make it easier for people like me to become citizens."
He said it is not amnesty that is being sought, but a legalization process -- one he says that can help political leaders of both parties.
"Everyone thinks Latinos are all Democrats, but that's only because Republicans haven't reached out," George said. "If they would get involved with us on this, it will help them in the long run."
Hilda Delgado, who works for the county federation and is involved in planning the trip, said the goal is not to seek amnesty.
"What we are looking for is to establish a path to citizenship for people who have lived here 10, 15, 20 years," Delgado said. "Their path has been blocked, and we want to see if it can be opened for them."
Farrell, who is now a consultant to Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, D-Los Angeles, said the issue goes beyond Latinos.
"Sure, here in Los Angeles, that's what people focus on, but across the country, there are immigrants from all over the world," Farrell said. "And this is an issue that has been building. We've come to take for granted our civil rights and haven't recognized the burdens that are falling on immigrants.
At the same time, Farrell acknowledged it had been hard to build support, even in the African-American community.
"Yes, it has been difficult," Farrell said. "There are those in the African-American community who oppose this. But we think they can be convinced to see the benefits."
And, he said, there are also divisions within the labor movements over the issue -- where there is concern over the loss of jobs to immigrants, who often are paid less.
"This is the right thing to do," Farrell said. "It is important for Los Angeles and for the country."
